Steve Mccurry

making at Pennsylvania State University; after working for two years for a local newspaper he decided to devote himself to photojournalism, and went to India to compose his first portfolio on that country. He lived for two years there working with the most famous and prestigious journals: Time, Live Newsweek,Geo and National Geographic. His passion of recording the effect and the consequences of war not only showing what impact war leaves on the landscape but rather on the human face, brings him to many war fronts, risking his life (Beirut, Cambodia, Kuwait, Afghanistan, former Yugoslavia, Tibet etc.etc).

Additionally trough his books we can see a strong interest for the eastern cultures and eastern religions such as Buddhism, he also explains that one of the most amazing things about traveling is ''to see how the same thing is done in a different way''.

He won many awards and distinctions over the year,s including Robert Capa Gold Medal, Magazine Photographer of the Year and four first prizes in the World Press Photo Contest, and he also became a member of Photo Magnum agency.

He is universally recognized as one of today's finest image-makers, his behavior, his photography and his passion involved architects, designers, art directors. His journeys tp study different cultures brought him to realize a lot of exhibitions, their impact on the viewers was huge, artists photographers, students, professors were attracted to his images, many people said that Steve McCurry shows passion and stirs up curiosity. Someone calls him ''pop star'' because he has the ability to please everyone. He never or rarely talks about himself, about his feelings and the risks that he met; trough his tasks we understand he loves to communicate stories about his travels or about subjects of his photographs.

Probably the most important image of Steve McCurry, which became a world icon, is ''Afghan girl'' (Sharbat Gula), it is his most loved photograph, and it was even filmed a movie on the girl and McCurry's story. The artist took this photo near a school in Peshawar in Pakistan, he was immediately fascinated to the face and the eyes of this girl. Steve pointed that he didn't spend more than a few seconds to photograph her: he said that the girl looked at him curiously and then disappeared running away. The image was also named ''the most recognized photograph'' in the history, was featured on the cover of the June 1985 issue of ''National Geographic Magazine''.

This is one of his favorite photographs, it was taken in Rajasthan during one of his voyages in northern India. To him this image is an exception because it was taken in a rush, in fact he prefers the technique of the patient and the long waiting to obtain the perfect shot. He uses to say ''if you wait, the people will forget your camera and the soul will drift up into view'';and about the technique of ''simple act of waiting'', he published a book called ''Unguarded Moment'' where we can see moments stolen to real five, but which to be taken, required hours of waiting. The next image is a perfect example of this concept. It is the cover of the book, and was taken in Jodhpur, the blue city of Brahmins(2007).

He is able to capture the essence of the human soul and joy, he devotes himself to each book he makes, all his photos were published with a specific reason and behind them is huge work that took time and patience.

For his last project in 2014 Steve McCurry traveled to Indonesia, Nepal and the Philippines. He wanted to testify domestic abuses on women who arrived from different countries dreaming to leave poverty of their village and hoping to find a good job and to start a new life. But they usually found just violence, fear and suffering, and they were treated like slaves. “They're at the complete mercy of these people who see them almost like slaves: ‘You’re my property, you’ll do what I say,’” he said. “They go home, and they’re disfigured, and they don’t have money, and they’re psychologically scarred. They end up coming home humiliated, and it becomes like a stigma. In a way, their lives are ruined.” on this project McCurry said “We wanted to tell them that this terrible evil act had to be exposed, just for humanity’s sake,”.
